Investment Management

BRI has a highly qualified and knowledgeable investment department with decades of portfolio management experience. Working together with our wealth managers, we are able to create bespoke portfolios tailored to our clients specific needs. Our services are typically aimed at private clients, charities and trusts, intermediaries and corporations.

Building strong working relationships with clients is the key to providing a high-quality service. We look after our clients generation after generation preserving their wealth for the future.

BRI gives investors the flexibility to decide whether they want us to manage their portfolio on a discretionary, advisory, or execution only basis. The option chosen is likely to depend on the client’s level of interest in, and understanding of, investment markets. Investors also need to consider how much or how little time they have available for day-to-day decision-making.

For any client looking for an investment manager, a professional approach is absolutely vital. This is one of the reasons why professional advisors such as accountants and solicitors actively refer their clients to BRI.

Financial Planning

BRI has a team of dedicated in-house financial planners who can review the wider financial planning market and ensure that our advice is tailored to each client’s unique requirements.

We practise a comprehensive approach to financial planning, putting our clients at the centre of the process. From the outset we allow plenty of time to make sure we understand your personal goals and objectives as well as your current financial circumstances before implementing our agreed plans.

Amongst BRI’s highly qualified employees are chartered financial planners; chartered status is the top qualification for the financial planning professional. We have combined this expertise with both experience and integrity, allowing us to deliver the best results possible for our clients.

As we are what’s known as “whole of market fee-based planners” our financial planners can advise investors on an exceptionally broad range of financial planning topics. These include key areas such as planning for retirement, business exit, inheritance, school or university fees, as well as tax restructuring. We are also able to access the entire financial marketplace to source the products most suited to helping you achieve your goals, be that in the short, medium or long term.

For those individuals committed to an integrated approach to their planning, we can also work with their existing (or, if required, refer them to) legal and tax advisers to ensure that their affairs are organised efficiently.

In some cases, however, we understand that individuals may have a financial goal in mind which is shorter term or less complex. In these cases, we can talk to you about working on a one-off fee basis.

Private Clients

During the past 50 years, we’ve come to understand that no two investors are alike. That’s why we listen closely to your reasons for investing, paying particular attention to your personal financial aims, priorities and concerns. Only when we fully know and understand your requirements will we start to develop a portfolio of investments to suit your individual circumstances.

How we advise you will depend on several factors. Whether, for example, you want an income from your investments, or whether you are aiming for long-term growth, or perhaps you want a combination of the two. We will also consider other factors such as your time horizon, as well as your other assets and taxation position.

We can incorporate a wide range of tax-efficient vehicles within your portfolio, such as a general investment account, ISAs, on and offshore bonds, family trusts, and pensions.

Discretionary Services

Whilst collective investment options and off-the-shelf products may suit the needs of some investors, those with portfolios in excess of £100,000 require a more sophisticated and tailored approach to maximise returns.

If you sign up to our discretionary management service, we will actively manage your investment portfolio in-line with your personal objectives. We will make all the relevant investment decisions and carry out all of the necessary paperwork on your behalf, so that you are free to concentrate on what’s important to you.

Managing an investment portfolio with the care and professionalism it deserves is extremely demanding. The speed of economic and political change, combined with an ever-increasing range of news sources, makes it extremely difficult for private investors to stay informed and interpret how their investments are affected. Consider, too, that the administration and paperwork associated with running a suitably diversified portfolio can be time-consuming, and any errors or delay in administration can be costly.

We are able to do this effectively on your behalf because, from the outset, we take the time to understand you and your investment requirements, as well as your attitude to risk. During our initial meetings we will discuss the full range of asset classes available to you and suggest how we would tailor your very own bespoke portfolio to best meet your investment aims and attitude to risk. This information is used to provide you with your own bespoke investment portfolio.

Once we agree on an approach that meets your objectives, we’ll use these parameters as the basis for day-to-day investment decisions, which are taken on your behalf. We will also review these parameters and recommendations regularly to ensure that your investments remain appropriate to your requirements. Should change be required, we can adapt the structure of your portfolio so that it remains in-line with these changing requirements.

Advisory Services

At BRI, we understand that some clients prefer to remain in control of the day-to-day investment decisions concerning their portfolios, but choose to leave the time-consuming administration and paperwork to someone else.

That’s why, as an Advisory client, your BRI advisor will contact you regularly to discuss individual investment ideas, and possible changes to portfolio construction. We will make no changes to your portfolio without your express agreement. Should you have investment ideas of your own, we would be pleased to discuss them with you in advance of us making a transaction on your behalf.

The day-to-day administration of your portfolio would be taken care of by BRI, leaving you free to focus on what is important to you.

Personal Portfolio

Our Personal Portfolio Service (PPS) is designed for clients where a fully bespoke service may not be necessary or cost-effective, for example, where clients do not require bespoke capital gains or income tax planning.

The PPS is available within a number of tax-efficient wrappers, such as ISAs, SIPPS and offshore bonds, as well as general investment accounts. It offers six core risk-rated portfolios, ranging from Cautious to Speculative which have been designed to capture the individual requirements you may have.

Administration of this service is provided through our partnership with Standard Life, and your investments can be viewed using Standard Life’s online platform.

Individual Savings Account (ISA)

At BRI we don’t regard ISAs as a separate product, but rather as an integral part of your overall portfolio. ISAs are a useful tax-efficient wrapper in which to hold your chosen investments. You may have accumulated several ISAs across a variety of different managers and may now find the task of managing them increasingly time consuming and challenging. There may no longer be a cohesive asset allocation strategy in place, or you may find it difficult to establish your overall portfolio value at any given point due to variations in valuation dates.

We can help you consolidate these investments into just one account with the BRI ISA. As well as making life easier for you, it will also ensure your portfolio is both actively managed and appropriately diversified.

Another key advantage of the BRI ISA is its competitive pricing structure. We’re able to transfer your existing ISA portfolio, either In-Specie or in cash. And, once you’ve moved your ISAs to us, your investments will be summarised in just one report, making it simpler and easier for you to stay informed about your investments and also reduce the amount of paperwork you receive.

Pensions

Pensions have become increasingly complicated with a raft of new legislation being introduced over recent years. The majority of these changes have been positive for investors with pensions now being one of the most tax-efficient arrangements available to assist with individuals’ planning, both in their lifetime and upon death. At BRI we provide advice around all aspects of pension and retirement planning covering both personal and employer arrangements.

Inheritance Tax Planning

Many more estates are being subject to inheritance tax even at relatively modest levels, especially as house prices continue to rise. BRI will work alongside or recommend other suitable professionals, such as solicitors and accountants, to ensure that your affairs are organised efficiently whilst continuing to meet your requirements for income and capital in later life. We have access to several solutions that will allow you access to both capital and/or income, whilst providing inheritance tax advantages. These include investments that qualify for business relief, a full range of trusts and enterprise investment schemes.

Tax Relieved Investments

BRI advises clients on how to organise their affairs in the most tax-efficient manner. As part of this strategy we advise on, and have access to, a full range of tax-relieved investments including ISAs, pensions, investments qualifying for business relief, enterprise investment schemes and venture capital trusts.

Charities & Trusts

At BRI we have extensive and in-depth experience of helping many charities protect and grow their assets. We understand that the charitable sector encompasses the broadest possible range of investment requirements. Indeed, our insightful and bespoke approach to wealth protection is, perhaps, why well-known charitable organisations have chosen to work with BRI for the past 20 years.

Discretionary Services

If you sign up to our discretionary management service, we will actively manage your investment portfolio in-line with your charity’s or trust’s objectives. We will make all the relevant investment decisions and carry out all of the necessary paperwork on your behalf, so that you are free to concentrate on what’s important.

Intermediaries

We have a dedicated Intermediary Division which provides tailored solutions for the IFA market. We understand the value of client relationships and we will work hard to not only manage your clients’ portfolios, but also reinforce your relationships with them.

We offer both direct and indirect relationships, therefore we can have as much or as little interaction with your clients as is appropriate.

Portfolio Management Service

We offer intermediaries two competitively priced management services: our Managed Portfolio Service and, for clients requiring a more tailored arrangement, our Bespoke Portfolio Service.

Whatever the size of your clients’ portfolios, and whichever BRI service you and your clients choose, you will benefit from the same team of experienced investment managers, using the same research tools and sophisticated investment analysis.

Clients have their own individual investment portfolios, managed on a discretionary basis by BRI’s expert investment team.

Offering greater flexibility, BRI’s portfolios can be managed on either a collectives-only basis or incorporate direct investment into equities, depending on the client’s needs.

These portfolios can accommodate a variety of tax wrappers including SIPPs, SSASs, ISAs, offshore bonds, and traditional accounts.

To find out more about BRI’s intermediary services, please contact David Craig, Head of BRI’s Intermediary Division on 01676 523 550 or email him on dpc@brigroup.co.uk.

Corporate

At BRI we work closely with many small and medium-sized businesses, and often the owner’s personal needs and business needs overlap. From a corporate perspective, we can advise on several areas, such as:

  • Pension planning for directors
  • Company pension schemes; SIPPs or SSASs, and auto-enrolment
  • Business protection and key person protection
  • Employee benefits

In areas where we do not formerly advise we work with a group of selected, trusted, advisors who match our values and professionalism. When necessary, we will refer you to them and work with both parties.

Discretionary Services

If you sign up to our discretionary management service, we will actively manage your investment portfolio in-line with your company’s objectives. Small Self-Administered Schemes (SSAS)

For some individuals, Small Self-Administered Schemes (SSAS) are the most appropriate pension schemes on offer. Our financial planners advise on these schemes, and our investment managers can manage any investment portfolio held within one.
