The government has streamlined the process for individuals to check and fill gaps in their National Insurance (NI) records, potentially increasing their State Pension, by introducing a new digital service on 29 April 2024.
Eligible individuals have until 5 April 2025 to make voluntary contributions to cover gaps in their NI record from 6 April 2006 to 5 April 2018. After 6 April 2025, voluntary contributions can only be made for the previous six tax years, following standard time limits.
The new digital service, Check your State Pension forecast, is a collaboration between HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Accessible via https://www.gov.uk/check-state-pension, GOV.UK or the HMRC app, it allows most people under the State Pension age to view gaps in their NI record and pay voluntary contributions if it benefits them.
The service provides individuals with details on how much their State Pension could increase and the required voluntary NI contributions. Users can select which years they wish to pay for and make secure payments. Users will then receive confirmation that their payment has been received and that their NI record will be updated.
Individuals will need their Personal Tax Account login details to access the service. Those without an online HMRC account can register on GOV.UK.
Please note, this service is not available to those already receiving their State Pension, self-employed, or those living outside the UK with gaps incurred while working abroad.
It is crucial to be vigilant against scams and never share HMRC login details, even with a tax agent. HMRC scams advice is available on GOV.UK.
